“The 'organised' bit of our street party simply consisted of getting permission to clear the street , getting the cars moved, hanging bunting and borrowing tables (from the local church).

The rest happened organically: the neighbours, food (bring and share tea stuff), music, games. Everyone just loved the street being clear and 'hanging out'. Dozens of kids biked, scootered and roller-bladed all day. All ages came (including students, who really appreciated the opportunity to meet the neighbours).

Everyone wants to do it again next year and possibly one in March too. This is the joy of keeping it simple. It can then evolve and grow as the community want.”

“In my experience, street parties are one of the most effective ways to bring communities together.”

“It felt good to have the road closed, the kids were able to go off round the block together, and did some funky chalk art on the road.”

“It was a fantastic evening.  There were about 200 people sitting on chairs, floor cushions and bits of carpet.  People seemed to love the idea that just for a while the streets belonged to them.”

“The event combined recycling with socialising as residents swapped unwanted goods ranging from saucepans to tents to stilts!  Neighbours came out of their homes, making new acquaintances and enjoying the autumn sunshine.”

“The slow bike race was a good laugh – there were several rounds, from kids on tricycles to adults with ride-on toys. The badminton net up across the road generated a lot of fun, particularly for the kids and volley ball.”
